The Caretakers of History: Viscri, Transylvania

Description

Tucked away in the hills of Transylvania, the village of Viscri feels like a place where time moves at its own gentle pace. While it is renowned for its centuries-old Saxon architecture, the true heartbeat of the village today belongs to its predominantly Romani population. They are the ones who work this land, walk these dirt roads, and keep the spirit of the community alive.

Standing beside this weathered cottage, right next to the local blacksmith's workshop, I could feel the layers of history intersecting. The traditional Roma smiths still forge iron by hand using century-old models, creating the very hinges and nails that keep these ancient Saxon structures standing.

In monochrome, this story of endurance truly comes to life. The dramatic, heavy sky provides a timeless backdrop, contrasting sharply against the bright plaster walls. There is a deep, quiet dignity here—not just in the timber and stone, but in the people who have become the caretakers of this historic landscape.
