The Unfinished Dream: Manifold Chapter House, Ballarat
Description
This architectural study captures the Former Christ Church Cathedral Chapter House in Ballarat, a building that represents a grand vision frozen in stone.
Built in 1888, it was designed by the prestigious firm Tappin, Gilbert and Dennehy. Funded largely by the pioneering Manifold family, this Gothic Revival structure was intended to be the administrative heart of a massive Anglican Cathedral that would have dominated the city's skyline.
Following the economic depression of the 1890s, the ambitious cathedral project was abandoned in 1904, leaving this chapter house to stand as a solitary "Quiet Sentinel".
The building has lived many lives, serving as the Diocese heart before becoming a well-known 1990s nightclub called "Hot Gossip". In 2007, it was meticulously converted into luxury residential apartments.
The photograph highlights the striking contrast between the dark, rugged Redan bluestone walls and the intricate, hand-carved Waurn Ponds limestone window traceries.
