The Northern Plains: A Monochrome Study
A collection by Erich Nussbaumer Born in the shadows of the Swiss Alps, my visual education began with a fascination for scale, structure, and the starkness of nature. Since arriving in Australia in 1976 and documenting its unique landscapes for over 50 years, I have found a profound, parallel beauty in the gnarled resilience of the Northern Plains. This collection is a study of contrast. Where Switzerland offers vertical grandeur, the Victorian plains offer horizontal endurance. Through a monochrome lens, I explore the 'Quiet Sentinels' of this region—the ancient Eucalyptus trees that have survived heat, fire, and flood. From the reflective rhythms of the Campaspe River at Aysons Reserve to the industrial grit of morning farmwork, these images capture the soul of a landscape that is as unyielding as any mountain range. My 10-year journey of daily photography culminates here, bridging two worlds through a shared appreciation for texture, light, and the timeless nature of black and white imagery.
